【研究旨趣】
從我進入民族所擔任助研究員以來，我的研究、計畫與寫作一直都有個人與區域／團隊的兩個面向。個人方面的研究集中在對於中緬交界的克欽／景頗／載瓦人群的研究，區域方面則集中在對於中國西南的研究。2002年以來我的研究重點主要在：1.中國雲南景頗及載瓦時間與物的研究，2.人觀與物的議題在中國西南族群間的比較研究，3.商品、階序與國家在區域歷史的人類學研究。在人類學理論上我的主要討論脈絡集中在對於「人觀、物與社會性」和「記憶與遺忘」的討論。
個人研究方面，既有出版論文（2007, 2004）與會議論文 (2007a, 2006,
2003, 2002)
與目前我正在進行的一本中文專書《中國景頗族的禮俗與生活》即從景頗／載瓦研究的個案，呈現對中國雲南景頗與載瓦時間與物的人類學研究成果，以及商品、階序與國家在克欽／景頗區域歷史的研究成果
。1999-2002以及2005年以來我開始收集中國檔案材料以及英國檔案館的緬北克欽材料。我著重的區域範圍西緣到伊洛瓦底江以東，東緣則至雲南的薩爾溫江以西。預期從通商貿易之角度寫作此區域的歷史人類學專書。目前已發表
Rethinking Kachin Wealth Ownership (2007) 與
Edmund Leach and Beyond—Map 3 of his
Political Systems of Highland Burma
一文(2008)。後者認為Leach書的地圖三是為作者擺盪理論所畫，創造了學術論述上的Kachin，也影響了近日來緬甸克欽獨立運動的發展與中國景頗族的實質化論述。只有打破此克欽的迷思，才有可能了解此區域人群文化、歷史糾結之扣連中不同歷史性的角色(1999a,
2006) 。
通過區域團隊與跨學科整合計畫，區域比較方面之部份成果，已呈現在我應邀主編的《生命儀禮、物與日常生活》上、下二本專輯(何2005a,
2005b)與導言(2005a,
2005b)中。跨學科整合成果則呈現在《國家、市場與脈絡化的族群》一書(2003)及其導言（2003）、評論文章(2002,
2004)與論文(出版中，2007a, b,
c)中。同時，通過我主持的〈界限的反思〉研究群(2002-2005)以及〈文化、歷史與區域〉研究群(2007-2009)繼續推進中。
