Silence, Noise, and Ritual
摘要 Abstract
Beginning with Rodney Needham’s observation that percussive noise tends to frame moments of ritual transition, this talk contrasts ritual uses of noise (uninterpretable sound) and silence (uninterpretable quiet), and it examines the reasons why ritual silence is much more rare than noise. One example will be a contrast between noisy Pentecostal glossolalia and silent Quaker meetings. A second example will focus on silence and noise in rural Taiwanese funerals of the 1970s. Part of the explanation lies in silence’s fragility compared to noise, and part in the potential of silence to break through the frames that noise excels at creating.
