講綱： Stand-up comics who perform live on the comedy club circuit use an array of techniques to make audiences appreciate the liveness of the event. For one, audiences will readily recognize that the experience of live stand-up is different from that of recorded shows because the comedian talks to people who are actually present in the room. The key here is practice, and a stand-up comic can’t practice without an audience, so integral is the audience to the genre. The only way to know if a line will get a laugh is to perform the line and see if it gets a laugh. Stage time is thus the only way to hone the craft of the stand-up comedian. In this paper I’ll unpack a performance clip from the first two minutes of a standup set to display the craft involved, which includes the art of creating the illusion. I use both performance and interview footage with standup comics Kristin Key and Stewart Huff to illustrate both the craft of construction and the resulting transformative magic it makes possible.
