Introduction In this paper, I present a brief account of my own experience of “March 11” and its aftermath, offer my thoughts on that experience as a “native”—who also happens to be a professional anthropologist—of the disaster-stricken area, and make a few suggestions as to what anthropology might be able to do. The profound and prolonged impact of the disaster on myself, my family, my relatives, and my friends in the city of Sendai and the Tohoku region, and on my students and colleagues at Tohoku University, has forced me to think and rethink what it means to be a “native-in-the-disaster-zone,” someone with deep social and psychological bonds with the people and place affected by earthquakes, tsunami, and the failure of a nuclear power plant “at home.” I lost three relatives to the tsunami but my immediate family was all safe, my house was little damaged, and my workplace was still standing after the big quakes. As many of us now say, “motto taihen na hito ga takusan iru” (many people fared a lot worse). The following is but an ordinary tale of one of the least affected.
