Taiwan Doesn’t Matter Until It Does: Navigating the Crossroads of China and Taiwan Studies

One of the easiest mistakes that those of us in Taiwan Studies can make is to assume that people are already interested in Taiwan. If we acknowledge that this is often not the case, we can use the far more common interest in China to benefit Taiwan Studies. A second set of issues we must face is the tendency for many of us in Taiwan Studies to condemn anyone who presents aspects of Taiwan’s culture as “Chinese.” This has bled into many of our understandings about the first generations of English-speaking anthropologists who went to Taiwan because they could not enter China. Here I argue that most of the critiques leveled against these scholars are misplaced and ignore our own culpability in implicitly reinforcing notions that Taiwan is a manifestation of Chinese culture. I conclude by exploring the nuances of terminology that references the China-Taiwan relationship with an aim to find the best means of negotiating this difficult terrain.
