摘要

In many Asian countries, activists, peasants, and citizens from all ranges of society – and sometimes even politicians – have found inspiration in religious and spiritual traditions to develop visions of an ecologically sustainable future. Based on ideas of a shared human responsibility for ensuring the health of the planet and its species, people draw on these traditions as they organize and mobilize to develop alternative, more sustainable ways of living. This may manifest in a staggering diversity of novel local practices and behavior, such as new forms of agricultural organization, alternative systems for recycling, or ecological education for the youth, to highlight just some. Yet we know little about the broader effects of such religiously or spiritually informed practices: Do they succeed in what they seek to achieve? And, do they hold the potential for effecting changes at a more universal level? In this presentation, we present a few select cases from the ongoing research project “Transcendence and Sustainability” that compares and analyzes contemporary spiritually driven environmental initiatives from India, China, Vietnam and Taiwan. The presentation focuses on initiatives in China and Taiwan – the research areas of the two authors. We discuss these projects ideational foundations, organizational set-up and local impacts, and offers a set of reflections about the possibilities for and obstacles to realizing their potential for generating change beyond the confines of locality.
