The Religious Question in Modern China, coauthored with David Palmer, and published by Chicago University Press in 2011 is a synthesis of the religious history of the Chinese world from the late Qing to the present. The talk will briefly introduce the book, its aims and some of its findings, and then explore the role of history in understanding the current religious situation.
