As queer activism has rapidly developed in South/East Asia, one of the common concerns is the effects of globalisation, through which the international LGBTI rights discourse and reactionary politics take place and circulate simultaneously. This study draws on interviews with queer activists in Taiwan and beyond and participant observations from the Taiwan LGBT Pride between 2011 and 2020 and the sixth ILGA-Asia Conference in 2015. The analysis of the narrative data enables us to read into queer activists’ embodied and affective responses to the international legal and political discourses regarding LGBTI rights in the field of the United Nations. I have conceptualised such responses as ‘queer ambivalence’ in problematising and resisting the nationalist/internationalist binary.
