摘要 In recent decades Taiwan’s dynamic socioeconomic growth and political transformations have brought changes to a number of traditions, including gender roles. Women in Taiwan today are more highly educated, enjoying their career status and are delaying marriage and parenthood. With more females entering the workforce, fewer women are taking on the traditional role of full-time motherhood. Parenting responsibilities are becoming less gender-bound in contemporary households and fathers are beginning to become more involved in raising children. Studies examining parenting roles and practices in Taiwan are limited and typically focus on the mother; however, a small but growing body of research on parent involvement has begun to focus on the role and participation of fathers in contemporary Taiwanese society.
During my presentation at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Ethnology, I will discuss the research that my colleagues and I have conducted utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in examining father involvement in Taiwanese families. This body of research include: progressive portrayals of father roles in Taiwanese cultural media including elementary school textbooks, picture books for children, television commercials, and parent magazines; ways that today’s fathers are involved in the lives of their young children, and; differences in aspects of involvement of fathers and mothers.
