The project considers traditional technologies not only in contemporary but also in historical terms. It draws upon fieldwork, archaeological findings, and other primary sources from various periods to accumulate information regarding traditional uses of distillation to produce medical distillates and tinctures in Taiwan. It will be based upon the following three main points:
1.Taiwan has a rich variety of own aboriginal cultures. Taiwan Studies experts will be the best referents to trace the past and present of the original medical traditions and the role of distillation in their own aboriginal cultures.
2.Taiwan’s traditional Chinese medicine and Daoism are rather relevant medical traditions in a global context, which have supported the experimentation and development of methods and recipes.
3.Taiwan should be considered as an important center of reception and exchange of different cultures: Western, Asian and Polynesian. Here the technology transfer, the flow of knowledge, and its influences over the centuries will be investigated.
This is a part of a greater research project under guidance of the World historian Paul D. Buell, PhD, that aims to converge the results of different experts of all around the world in order to draw a comparative investigation on this topic.
