大綱 This talk outlines a just-drafted book-length “anthro-history” of a pilgrimage center (Huanglong 黃龍) and an old walled city (Songpan 松潘) in northwest Sichuan, ranging from the early Ming dynasty to the age of tourism. It suggests how long-term history and current ethnography can be mutually relevant in studying state/local and inter-ethnic relations; tests ideas of Marshall Sahlins, Ernest Gellner, et al., in analyzing the Ming/Qing tusi (土司) system and the 1954-60 democratic reform (民主改革); and explores the question of shifting Tibetan and other local and national identities.
