In this talk, after tracing the path which had led me to my research field, I will focus the final chapter of my book Recovering Histories: Life and Labor after Heroin in Reform era China, which explores the career and recovery of Yan Jun, a controversial NGO leader. I start by relating two distinct ways that Yan came to publicly narrate how his addiction history inflected his civil society work—first as the leader of a grassroots network and later as courageous defender of the rights of people with drug use history. An examination of alternative perspectives on Yan’s civil society commitments lead me to question my approach to recounting his life. My struggles to provide a cohesive account of this figure prompt me to turn to our relationship. I speak about how my complicated attachments to Yan and his shifting projects were shaped by my roles as foundation employee and fieldworker. In turning to a dream I had just before completing this text, the chapter finishes by questioning the phenomenological approach that has structured the book.
