How do people on Kinmen engage with political forms, in complicity with or which complicate sovereign workings? What insights might we glean from their interactions with Chinese gods under conditions where they perceive their cultural being as under siege? I examine how people on Kinmen relate spiritually and affectively to Chinese gods and ritual customs, withholding the temptation to privilege the imperial metaphor and foregrounding instead “intimacy” in its multiple valences. Through the ordinarily intimate, I explore how conditional devotion, legitimate play, familiar struggles with, and manipulation of authority undergird ostensibly innocuous engagements with imperial gods, where the latter exists as “sovereigns” in name. Comparatively, engagements with “sovereignty” could also be found in popular, media, and scholarly re-framings of rituals as Chinese customs, which bring to question the stakes of marginal, vernacular attempts to resuscitate imperial cultures.
