What does ”field research“ mean to an anthropologist? And how does the “field” contribute to the production of anthropological knowledge? To answer these questions, I analyzed my field research experience on the Sewol ferry disaster, conducted from May 2014 to 2020, focusing on the three “fields”(hyŏn-chang, 現場) I encountered. The three hyŏn-chang refer to the “local hyŏn-chang” as a local community or place, the “accident hyŏn-chang” as the site where the incident occurred, and the “struggle hyŏn-chang” as the arena of resistance. In this paper, I will discuss the distinct characteristics of these three fields and examine how each contributed to the production of anthropological knowledge about the Sewol ferry disaster.
