在人類學的形成與發展時期,對基督教的研究因為學科本身對文化差異的關注而受到壓抑。一方面,基督教因其與西方文化的親近性,被視為是明顯的、已知的現象而受到忽略。另一方面,基督教在人類學家的田野地,也常因它是外來宗教而被視為缺少文化真確性,導致其文化地位被否認。不過,1980年代以來對人類學知識的反身性思考,指出人類學對基督教的態度嚴重限制了學科本身的發展,而促成最近十幾年來基督教人類學(anthropology of Christianity)的興起。本土基督教的研究,開始在社會文化比較研究的理論中佔據重要的位置。台灣的人類學界向來對原住民的改宗議題頗為關注,但仍有開拓更寬廣研究領域並與基督教人類學相關理論深入對話之必要。近年來比較南島研究的興起是一個令人欣喜的發展,但台灣研究大洋洲的學者對深深影響大洋洲地區歷史、宗教與政治的本土基督教也需要進一步的關注。因此,本研討會邀請研究亞洲與大洋洲地區本土基督教的相關學者,透過個別研究與區域性的比較,來探討基督教、現代性與社會文化變遷之間複雜的關係。
