Until recently, comics and animation have been of little interest to anthropologists, historians, and sociologists, serving only as primary sources for those studying childhood or political satire. However, with the rising economic importance of the comics, animation, and gaming industries, anthropologists and other scholars have begun to pay more attention to these media. They have studied how comics and animation reflect and influence political discourse, ideology, and identities, and how the affordances of these media provide new ways of seeing the world (eg, Lamarre, Steinberg, Manning, Nozawa).
Along with this interest in the cultural meaning and social influence of comics and animation has come increased attention to the possibilities graphic media afford for the presentation of ethnographic, historical, and sociological research and theory. The documentary and reflective functions of comics and animation were pioneered by autobiographical comics artists such as Art Spiegelman, Harvey Pekar, Marjane Satrapi, and Joe Sacco. More recently, indigenous artists have produced many comics as well as animated films and role-playing games which use their own visual and narrative styles to teach their cultures and histories, countering the dominance of colonialist tropes in these media. In 2017, the University of Toronto Press published the first book (Lissa) in a new series of graphic novels designed to present reflections on fieldwork to old and new audiences. This conference will bring together anthropologists, historians, and artists from North America and Asia to discuss (and contribute to) the relationship between graphic storytelling and the practices of ethnography and historiography.
