筆者為一跨領域的人類學家,結合田野調查及社會心理層面的質性訪談,一直是我的主要的研究方法。在理論上,Michel Foucault關於權力對主體的生產性是我理論上的出發點。貫穿我多項研究計劃之主軸,是台灣從壓縮現代性(compressed modernity)過渡到後壓縮現代性的歷史演變中,個人及家庭如何在這個歷史背景中調適與轉變。在這個特定的歷史脈絡下,我特別關注於性別 (gender)、身體 (body) 以及向上流動的慾望 (aspiration) 如何在主體化的建構、重構及解構中交織與連結。筆者之前的研究議題涵蓋批判性的美貌研究(critical beauty studies)、批判性的肥胖研究 (critical fat studies)、台灣女性不婚不育或離婚的人類學考察,而我現在有三個相互關連的研究計劃 :
拒絕親職(childlessness)
雖然生育率下降已成為全球趨勢,但東亞(包括台灣)是世界上生育率最低與拒絕生育比例最高的地區。儘管現有文獻提供了詳盡的人口統計資料,但生育抉擇中的多重動機、遲疑不決與複雜決策過程往往在問卷調查與量化分析中被忽略或隱形化。本研究以拒絕親職的台灣年青人為核心,分析其身處全球最低出生率社會中的生命經驗。超越個人主義及去歷史化的分析角度,此研究採取關係取向來分析生育現象,並將其置於台灣邁向後壓縮現代性的歷史轉型脈絡之中。此外,在以量化研究為主流的人口研究中,我特別關注於以質性研究發掘情感因素在生育決擇過程中所扮演的重要角色。
產後護理之家的人類學考察
女性的向上流動慾望時常是多重及跨個體、跨世代的。筆者從人類學對生產儀式的豐富遺產及研究成果出發,以產後護理之家為例,探討女性如何在少子女化的脈絡下大幅提高對下一代健康、心理及發展方面的投資。筆者以月子中心為例,輔以醫療人類學文獻及女性主義對“密集母職 (intensive mothering)” 的研究成果,探討女性如何地在不要輸在起跑點的心態下大量、密集地從新生兒階段即開始對下一代進行有形及無形的資本投注,以及月子中心如何商業化此種關於下一代未來競爭力的親職焦慮。
台灣年青人的另類人生選擇
我最後一個研究計劃是台灣年輕人拒絕向上流動的的另類人生選擇,以自我認同為魯蛇族、躺平族、厭世代、崩世代或佛系青年之心路歷程及人際協商為研究重點。筆者希望深入探索在“後壓縮現代性或“後發展主義 (post-develpomentalism)” 下,當代台灣年青人對美好人生的另類想像。
