【English Summary】

Comparative Austronesian Studies Research Group (CASRG)

Comparative Austronesian Studies Research Group (CASRG) is dedicated to the collaboration among colleagues of Austronesian studies worldwide. Based upon the profound, long-standing legacy of the research of Austronesian-speaking indigenous peoples in Taiwan and the newly emerged research in island Southeast Asia and Oceania in Taiwan scholarship, CASRG intends to further develop the studies of contemporary Austronesian societies and cultures from the following dual perspectives: “ethnographic comparison across the regions” and “local societies in human socio-historical configurations.”

Overall, CASRG focuses not only upon how the Austronesian peoples perceive the transformation of their lifeworlds in contemporary political, economic, and socio- cultural contexts around the world, but also upon how they understand as well as creatively react to contemporary turmoils by means of local practices and imaginations. Concerning both the lifeworld reality of Austronesian peoples and the development of anthropological knowledge, CASRG sets out to tackle the following issues: Law and Anthropology; Indigenous Christianity; Cultural Relativization, Cultural Performance and Authenticity; ModernState and Cultural Politics; Configurations and Heterogonous Ontologies of Contemporary Capitalisms. In order to break new ground in these issues, CASRG emphasizes both the deepening of anthropologically-driven research agendas and the accumulation of contemporary ethnographies of the contemporary. CASRG also upholds that substantial interdisciplinary dialogues and exchanges are conducive to both the fusion of horizons and the advancement of knowledge. In addition to staff researchers at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, CASRG also invites researchers in Austronesian studies from different disciplines at various institutes for intensive ethnographic discussions. Our goal is to broaden the horizons of anthropological research in Taiwan, and to increase its visibility internationally.

The members of CASRG currently include Pei-yi Guo (Convener), Wei-ning Cheng, Bien Chiang, Wen-te Chen, Shiun-wey Huang, and Shu-yuan Yang within IOE; and Yu-ping Chen, Wei-chung Cheng, Da-wei Kuan, Kai-shyh Lin, Futuru Cheng-liang Tsai, Awi Mona (Chih-wei Tsai), Yuan-chao Tung, and Shu-ling Yeh from various universities in Taiwan.
